The celebration of festivals is at the core of Tierra Madre Preschool. Our seasonal festivals are a joyous celebration of life and lifts us out of the ordinary and into the mysteries and magic of the rhythm of the seasons. While we hold a reverent space, rooted in the natural world, our festivals are in no way a religious experience nor are we affiliated with any religious organization
On this occasion we get to express our deepest gratitude for the harvest’s bounty! We put our garden to sleep and celebrate our abundance together as a community. As the days grow shorter and Summer cedes to fall, we look inward and find one’s own strength and courage during this time.
Also known as the “festival of compassion”, Tierra Madre’s Lantern Walk affirms that light will continue to shine, even as the light and warmth of the sun are waning. This festival is held after dusk @ the magical Reunity Resources Farm, when our lantern light breaks through the outer darkness of approaching winter. Together, we mark the end of harvest and the beginning of winter.
This is a celebration of quiet confidence, of carrying light in darkness, of sharing that light with others. A spiral of greenery is laid with a center candle placed, and each child (with or without a parent) is given a turn to make his or her way through the spiral to the center, carrying an unlit candle. When the center candle is reached the children light their own candle and then place it along the spiral on their way back out. As the children place their candle along the path the light in the room slowly grows. It is a quiet and moving experience, both to participate in and to watch.
Candlemas is a time of year when the lengthening of daylight hours becomes noticeable! The day is celebrated because it means that winter will soon be over and spring will soon come! This time of darkness will soon end and new light and life-sustaining growth is approaching. For this festival we often make or decorate beeswax candles for the children to take home for their families to celebrate the return of the light.
Every year in March, we at Tierra Madre Preschool plant wheat grass baskets and invite our beloved Lady Spring to visit and participate in the morning. This is the first opportunity to celebrate Spring and it’s a very magical and festive experience for all!
The beautiful May Pole, decorated with colorful garlands, symbolizes the life and growth of spring time! This festival is celebrated as an entire school community where we feast, sing and dance!
It is time to leverage your natural abilities, cultivate your awareness and unpack the challenges and obstacles in your relationship with your children. I will support you in elevating your parenting and creating a new, more fulfilling, narrative. Let’s do this!
